Shane van Gisbergen has pulled off an absolute masterclass today to win at Watkins Glen and claim his first win of the season.
Van Gisbergen started on the pole and lead most of the first stage, before pitting with 2 laps to go, leaving teammate Ross Chastain to win Stage 1.
Stage 2 was interrupted by a tent of all things flying onto the track, which shook up the strategy slightly, but Van Gisbergen was able to pull through for the victory.
With a 50-lap Stage 3 (10 laps longer than a usual Watkins Glen race), the strategy was up in their air, with drivers opting for alternate strategies; Michael McDowell being one of them who started on the front row but was only able to claim one stage point for the entire day.
Austin Cindric and Van Gisbergen were able to claim the most stage points of the day.
Ten laps into the final stage, Team Penske’s Joey Logano suffered a mechanical issue that left debris on the track.
With the pit-window being around 35 laps, it left the door open for multiple strategies coming to the end of the race.
Van Gisbergen, Tyler Reddick, and a few others stayed out while most of the field opted to pit under caution.
It looked all-but over for Van Gisbergen, as Ty Gibbs and Connor Zilisch looked to be in the catbird seat for most of the final stage.
Van Gisbergen pit in the middle of the run and was able to make up 29 seconds in 17 laps to overtake Gibbs for the lead with 10 to go, while Zilisch suffered a flat tyre and dropped out of contention.
The Kiwi once again had the entire field scratching their heads from his unbelievable pace.
The rest of the top 5 consisted of McDowell, Gibbs, Chase Briscoe and Reddick.
The win would put Van Gisbergen back into the top 16 in points after entering the race 19th.
Next week, the NASCAR Cup Series heads to Dover for the All-Star race.
