Ryan Blaney has won the fourth race of the NASCAR season amid high controversy involving his teammate Joey Logano.
It always looked like it was to be one of the three Penske Mustang’s winning today’s race, with both Austin Cindric and Logano running in the top 10 for much of the day.
Blaney won a quiet first stage, fending off challenges from Christopher Bell, Logano, Cindric, Tyler Reddick and more.
The day proved to be a challenge for big names in the sport including Kyle Busch, Chase Briscoe and Shane van Gisbergen, with Busch running outside the top 30 for a large portion of the afternoon, before recovering to finish in 17th, Biscoe finishing with a DNF and van Gisbergen recovering from two spins to finish 11th.
Among those getting in the action was Logano, driving a special Team Penske car honouring Scott McLaughlin’s 2019 Bathurst 1000 victory.
On the lap 217 restart, Logano pushed Ross Chastin’s #1 Chevrolet a little too hard which sent him back across the track in front of the field.
Chastain collected the likes of Anthony Alfredo driving the #48 Hendrick Chevrolet filling in for Alex Bowman, and Logano’s teammate Cindric.
This now marks the fourth week in a row Cindric has driven in the top 10 most of the day before getting caught in a late wreck.
But that wasn’t all for Logano, on a restart 30 laps later he turned in front of AJ Allemdinger and came back across the track collecting Josh Berry, Daniel Suarez and more, essentially ending all of their days.
Logano’s teammate Blaney went on to win by 0.4 seconds over Bell who lead a race-high 176 laps.
The NASCAR Cup Series turns to Las Vegas next weekend, with many drivers looking to rebound from race-ending damage in Phoenix.
